Summer is just around the corner and that means great weather, grilling, and plenty of Colorado Soccer. The final week of May still has plenty and hopefully the weather starts to comply as well. To stay up to date on all of Colorado soccer, be sure to subscribe.

Rapids Roundup:
The Burgundy Boys won 1-0 at home over the weekend when they beat St Louis City after some lightning strikes and torrential rain delayed the start of the game. The lineup featured an orthodox set of starters all of whom had plenty to prove. Rotational players Ian Murphy, Teddy Ku-DiPietro, Sam Bassett, and Nico Hansen all put in great shifts highlighted by the connection between KDP and Darren Yapi who scored the lone goal. The Denver native is now up to three goals for the season and is enjoying valuable minutes whilst Designated Player Rafael Navarro nurses an ankle injury.
The Rapids would have had two games this week but their May, 31st match against LAFC has been rescheduled due to their conflicting match against Club America now coined ‘$10 Million Dollar Game’ for a spot in the Club World Cup. The Rapids will now just have a midweek encounter on the road against the Portland Timbers who are coming off a 1-0 loss against Orlando after a long trip across the country. The midweek will be sure to test both team’s depth and fitness levels. On the roster for the home side are former Colorado Rapids players Eric Miller and more recently Omir Fernandez.

Switchbacks Check In
It’s not often that the Switchbacks get featured on Box State Footy (let alone at all). Hands up on that one. Box State Footy managed to make it out to the US Open Cup game in which they lost 4-1 to the travelling New York Red Bulls. Since then, the Springs have gone 1-1-1 with two of those three games being on the road. Matt Mahoney’s lone goal was enough to see out a win against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in their home match on May 17th. However, they’re most recently coming off a 3-1 loss on the road in which attacking midfielder Anthony Fofana both scored and received a red card.
Their championship defending season hasn’t been as disastrous as the LA Galaxy’s this season but they’re not as surging as they once were. This is the same team that started last season on a five game losing streak eventually turning it around throughout the season into their cup winning run. They still are just a few points out from midtable as well. The sooner one of of their goalscorers finds form the sooner they’ll be back to their strong level. Justin Dhillon leads the team with five goals but he has not scored since April 23rd.
The Switchbacks’ next match will be in the re-formatted Jagermeister Cup against El Paso Locomotive.

Colorado High School Champions
Weidner Field in Colorado Springs hosted some more championship matches. The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) held their High School Girls Soccer Championship Finals for their scholastic divisions from 2A through to 5A. The matches were held over the course of two days and featured two schools with first ever state championships. 2A champions Loveland Classical (#6) beat Flatirons Academy (#8) 3-0 winning their school’s first ever State Championship. 3A Champions Colorado Academy and 4A Champions Evergreen went back to back as they each, as the first seed of their respective divisions, won consecutive State Championship titles. 5A Champions Fossil Ridge (#6) also came away with their first ever Girls Soccer State Championship beating Broomfield (#10).
For a more comprehensive breakdown, CHSAA has detailed recaps, brackets, and a program as well.

Box State Footy Player of the Week:
Griffin Dorsey had himself a game against the San Jose Earthquakes on the road for the Houston Dynamo. Dorsey, from Evergreen Colorado, plays as a dangerous attacking full back. He scored and assisted two of the Dynamo’s three goals that evening.
Content Schedule
There will be no Outside the Box this week. The midweek games make it increasingly difficult to really get a show in in time AND account for my own individual work load. Burgundy Banter will likely be recorded and uploaded sometime before the Portland Timbers match. After this last stretch of midweek games we roll into June and I’ll have a lot more off my plate to get more consistent content out.
Thanks for reading Box State Footy! This post is public so feel free to share it.
Survey of the Day:
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! I have a lot of fun writing ideas but feel I need to focus and lock in on one main idea and feature. With that being said, and as a thank you for reading; I want to poll you, the readers and see what you would like as a feature for next week. The options are concepts already done on the site before including the xEye Test (player performance eye test vs stats), Where are they Now? match squads from various Colorado teams, or a standard Rapids Box State Game Preview. If you haven’t liked any of the features above you can also vote for something new!
Have a great rest of your week and I’ll see you again next week!
